5 Additional Strategies for Boosting Your Business's Eco-Friendliness

May. 13, 2025

Businesses have long understood the need to adopt more eco-friendly practices, but it’s important to remember that while transitioning to a paperless office and recycling waste certainly don’t hurt, they’re pretty outdated tips. To become a more sustainable business, brands must look beyond the advice that was given ten years ago and instead look at incorporating additional eco-friendly strategies into their operations.

In this post, we’ll run through some modern solutions that are gaining traction, which can help your business become an eco-warrior within your industry.

  • Encourage Employees to Cycle or Rideshare to Work

Even the most ‘green’ of businesses will struggle to be a true environmental champion if they have dozens of employees all driving to and from work each day.

One interesting solution to this issue is to encourage your employees to cycle to work. Not only does this eliminate the carbon impact of the commute, but it can also boost staff mental and physical well-being. If you’re in a position to do so, look at offering employees a stipend to buy a bicycle they can use to get to work.

If that’s not possible, then maybe starting a rideshare initiative could work. It’s much better to have five people in one car, rather than one person in five cars. You might need to offer some incentives to encourage workers to do this, though!

  • Switch to Eco-Friendly Tools

Your worksite, too, can have a big impact on your eco-friendly credentials. An outdated HVAC system, for instance, will be much more damaging to the environment than a modern, well-maintained system. Even seemingly smaller things that you use to keep your work premises looking good can have an impact. It’s better to use a battery lawn mower to keep any external grass areas tidy, rather than a lawn mower that uses fossil fuels. As for the cleaning products you use, endeavour to use products that use natural ingredients whenever possible.

  • Source Locally

The products you use at your business may be inherently eco-friendly, but if they’ve had to travel halfway across the world to arrive at your doorstep, then their carbon impact will be large. If you haven’t already done so, look at sourcing locally from sustainable companies.

  • Provide Repair/Upcycle Support

The products a business sells may be more eco-friendly than others, but if they break more easily, then they’ll have a worse impact on the environment compared with other, longer-lasting products. One good way to boost your company’s eco-friendliness is to offer free repairs and upcycle support. This will show that you genuinely care about the long-lasting impact of the products you sell. Plus, it’ll also function as an effective way to impress your customers!

  • Add a Garden To Your Worksite

Finally, consider adding a garden to your worksite. This can help lower cooling costs, build connections between staff and the natural world, and overall show a commitment to the planet. You can even grow vegetables that you can use in your office kitchen, or host eco-friendly events.
