Director Samuel Bayer Unveils Creative Labor of Love, Short Film "TIME"
Dec. 14, 2022
Award-winning Director Samuel Bayer teamed up with Arcade Editor Matt Laroche to tell the moving story of the short-film entitled "TIME."
Samuel Bayer is an award-winning visual artist, photographer, director and cinematographer, from New York City. Bayer moved to Hollywood in 1991 and launched his career with the decade-defining music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for Nirvana, which MTV has consistently lauded as one of the most important and iconic videos of all time.
Editor Matt Laroche Born and raised in Southern California, Laroche's love of film was sparked at a young age when he discovered his parents’ extensive movie collection. With a budding interest in filmmaking, as a high school student he immersed himself in the art by writing screenplays, directing homemade movies and teaching himself how to edit in Final Cut Express.
Bayer expressed:
"This was a labor of love I couldn’t have completed without my friends' support or the dedication of Arcade Edit, who sorted through hours of my archives. Matt Laroche’s vision shaped this film into what it became. Lime Studios did a perfect balancing act with the sound mix. I wanted to make a film that touches your heart no matter what your journey through this life is, or will be."
The film tells a story of love and mortality, starring Odom Williams and Betty Williams, a couple from South Central Los Angeles that have been married for 75 years. Bayer used his own archival footage, including a Trump Rally and a Black Lives Matter Protest to create something emotional and powerful along with detailed imagery that "conveyed the darkness, chaos, fragility, and pressure of life" according to Bayer.
Arcade Editor, Matt Laroche shared:
"I have a lot of admiration for Sam's work, so the opportunity to collaborate with him on such a personal story was one I didn’t take lightly. There was a tremendous amount of material and whittling it down to best express his vision in a sensible runtime was not a simple process. Fortunately, Sam really allowed me to explore the dailies and form my own perspective on the footage. He has great instincts but he’s also a gracious director who really wants you to be your most creative. It was truly a pleasure to edit this film with him."
