Park Pictures UK has signed writer and director Jeremy O. Harris to its roster of talent. Harris’ breakout Broadway hit Slave Play earned a record-breaking 12 Tony nominations and earned him a reputation for shaping stories that move the culture forward. In signing with Park Pictures UK, he looks to bring his bold sensibilities to commercial filmmaking and other directorial opportunities.
Harris said:
"Park Pictures UK has platformed a coterie of directors with a specificity of voice and protects their visions. When imagining partners for my transition into film they were at the top of my mood board. I’ve told stories from every possible angle, and want to build more dynamically in the world of film. To do so alongside some of my favorite filmmakers is one of my greatest honors. I look forward to seeing what we make together and what opportunities lie ahead.”
Harris recently directed the narrative-driven music video for Carly Rae Jepsen's "Don't Leave Me on the Dance Floor," chronicling a man gradually taking accountability for a breakup and grieving this loss through beautifully framed scenes and captivating visuals. His directing sensibility is rooted in years of experience across the industry, both behind and in front of the camera. He served as a co-producer on Euphoria Season 2, after consulting on its first season, produced and co-wrote the A24 film Zola, directed by fellow co-writer Janicza Bravo, earning him a Best Screenplay nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards, and directed the HBO Original documentary Slave Play. Not a Movie. A Play., winning the Cinema Eye Honor for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Film. Through his production company bb², Harris produced Pete Ohs' Erupcja, featuring Charli XCX and premiering at TIFF, as well as Xavier Tera’s directorial debut, The Color of the Sun, honored with the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival. As an actor, he performed in shows like Gossip Girl, High Maintenance, What We Do in the Shadows, and the Sean Price Williams feature film The Sweet East.
Park Pictures UK Managing Director / EP Fran Thompson added:
“We have been massive fans of Jeremy's for a long time, so when we heard he was moving into directing, we knew we wanted to work with him. If his work on ‘Don't Leave Me on the Dancefloor’ and his incredible overall portfolio are any indication of what he has in store as a director, we are all in for a treat.”
Harris remains a prolific playwright, with works including Yell: A Documentary of My Time Here, which chronicles his years earning his MFA at Yale, along with Spirit of the People, which premiered on the MainStage at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, in which Harris is also running as the inaugural head of the creative collective. He has also produced off-Broadway work, including Prince F*ggot by Jordan Tannahill and a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window. His accolades include the Lorraine Hansberry, Rosa Parks, and Paula Vogel Playwriting Awards.
He is credited with originating the concept of the Black Out performance — an event in which artistic work is staged for an explicitly majority-Black audience. Harris has also used his success to give back, including funding new commissions for Black women playwrights and donating a collection of plays by Black and brown writers to libraries in all 50 states.
