Logan & Sons' David Slade's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Wins Two Primetime Emmys
Sep. 23, 2019
Logan & Sons’ David Slade, the director behind Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, capped an incredible awards season run as the groundbreaking interactive science-fiction film captured two Primetime Emmy awards, including Outstanding Television Movie.
The streaming film, a standalone feature in the Black Mirror anthology series, also won an Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Within a Scripted Program.
The movie, which is set in 1984 England, allows viewers to control the actions of the main character, young computer programmer Stefan Butler (Fionn Whitehead), who is adapting a choose-your-own-adventure novel as a video game. The dark, psychological tech thriller with multiple endings blurs the line between reality and fantasy as Stefan works to finish writing the video game while also dealing with his own traumatic past.
Slade had previously directed the 2017 Black Mirror episode “Metalhead.” The film was written by Black Mirror series creator Charlie Brooker and also won the Innovation Award from Britain’s Broadcasting Press Guild.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is the British director’s fourth feature film, which include Hard Candy (2005), 30 Days of Night (2007) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010). Slade directed a portion of the 2018 anthology horror feature Nightmare Cinema, as well as episodes of NBC horror-thriller Hannibal, Starz’s fantasy drama American Gods and AMC’s acclaimed crime drama Breaking Bad, among other series.
In his diverse portfolio, Slade directed spots for the Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood videogame series and the MTV Exit Foundation, for which he won a Cannes Silver Lion.
